I heard it on the news a few mornings ago and it is now pretty much confirmed. Florida’s population is on the verge of overtaking New York state’s population. This is no surprise to me. I see it all the time. People from all over the country, and around the world, are flocking to the Sunshine State.
We aren’t a perfect state, no state ever is, but we do have some great qualities. And therein lies my fear. I don’t want us to change!
We have no state income tax. Great! Let’s keep it that way. I have my own personal opinions about this and without getting too political, I am a financial conservative.
We have great job opportunities. Sure, the backbone of our economy is tourism and with that most jobs in the Hospitality industry are low wage hourly jobs. But here’s the thing, I have been in the Hospitality industry for going on 11 years now. If you work hard, show maturity, responsibility, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to better yourself, you can easily move through the ranks. And in the Hospitality industry, if you love it, if you have the right positive outlook, employment is easily secured.
We have great weather…. for the most part. Sure our Summers are nearly unbearable and yes, there are hurricanes. Our Winters are schizophrenic, one day it’s pleasant, the next day Jack Frost is here. But every state has their own natural disasters to worry about. We also have sinkholes. So if you are thinking of moving to Florida then be sure you research your area, the construction of your home, and pour through your insurance policy.
I know that with this growing population boom it is going to be difficult to stay exactly the same. All I ask from you, new friends and neighbors, is respect our economy and how it works, don’t try to change it, and respect our natural resources. Also… please stay off I-4 there’s enough people on that nightmare road as it is. Welcome to the Sunshine State, we’re glad you came!
